Homemade Dog Treats: Peanut Butter and Banana Cupcake Recipe

In part 6 of our Sunday Bites series,  we are sharing our love of cake with our furiends.  Well, who doesn’t love cake and it seems a shame not to share one of life’s greatest indulgences with our best friends!  These homemade dog treats certainly got a big paw up from Millie. I suspect our peanut butter and banana cupcakes were always going to be a winner, especially when teamed with a little bit of honey too.

You’ll spot this recipe has a few more ingredients than our past few weeks recipes, but still super simple and I would imagine 95% of kitchens have these ingredients lying around too.

Peanut Butter and Banana Cupcake Recipe

Preparation Time: 20 minutes; Cooking Time: 12-15 mins

Difficulty:   Easy

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 80g peanut butter*
  • 1 egg
  • 40 grams of wholemeal flour
  • 45 grams of rolled oats
  • 70ml water
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 ripe banana (mashed)

remember to make sure your peanut butter is free of the ingredient xylitol.  I always use 100% whole peanut butter which you can find in most stores (if you are based locally in Carnoustie, you’ll find this in Gather).

You’ll also need some mini cupcake paper cases and/or a muffin tin.

Method:

#1 Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celcius

Pop your oven to 180 degrees Celcius so that it’s ready to bake when you are.

#2  Line your baking tins

Set our your mini cupcake paper cases in muffin tins or grease/line your tins.  As you can see, I couldn’t quite find enough muffin tins so opted to use baking trays to hold the cases.

#3  Mix your egg, honey and mashed banana together

Crack your egg into a medium-sized bowl and using a wooden spoon mix together with your honey and mashed banana

n.b. you could do all of this in a food processor but I opted for as little washing up as possible mess as possible ;0)

#4 Add in the remaining ingredients – flour, oats, water, baking powder and yummy peanut butter

Add in all of the remaining ingredients and mix until it forms a sticky dough like consistency.  It doesn’t look particularly nice at this stage but I promise your dog will love these ;0)

#5  Let the mixture settle then spoon into paper cases

After letting the mixture settle for around 15 minutes, divide the mixture evenly among the prepared cupcake liners.

I chose to make around 21 cupcakes by filling the cases up by around a third. You could make between 12 and 20ish depending on the size of cupcakes you’d like to make, but I wanted to leave some space for frosting and toppings. If you plan to leave them plain, fill each about two-thirds full and they won’t spill over their cases.

#6  Ready, Steady…. Bake!

Time to grab a cuppa and pop them in the oven.  The peanut butter and banana cupcakes should take between 12-15 minutes and once golden brown are fully cooked.

You can check they are fully cooked by inserting a skewer and checking it comes out clean.

#7  Leave to cool

While your furiends will be pacing around you, desperate for a cupcake, you’ll need to let these cool down.

Pop them on wire rack to help them cool down quicker.

Now…. are you ready for treat time?

#8  Treat Time!

After a long Sunday morning walk, all three spaniels were desperate to try these out.  As you can see, Millie got in there first!!

You can store in an airtight container for around 2/3 days at room temperature but remember you could also freeze these too!

If you are feeling adventurous or want to mix them up, remember you could top these with some low-fat cheese  and a mini doggy treat. Yep, your very own doggy pupcake frosting!!

Perfect for a little doggy celebration too ;0)
